1. Take off their shoes – Don’t allow shoes past the front door. Shoes track in a lot of germs, dirt and mud, which can all get trapped in the carpet. TIP: Try using two doormats. Place one mat outside and the other inside to create double the opportunities to prevent dirt. You can even add a cute sign by the doorway to help remind guests.
  2. Make the bed – Your bed is the focal point of a bedroom. A made bed makes your bedroom instantly look and feel cleaner, even if there are messes in other places. TIP: To make your bed faster, lift up the corners of the bed to tuck in your sheets and blankets.
  3. Wipe down kitchen counters – Before you go to bed, clear off the clutter on your countertops and wipe them down. A wet rag or paper towel will help clean most debris and immediately freshen up your home. TIP: Reduce clutter by using a cute basket to store keys, mail, and important papers you will need later.
  4. Clean as you cook – Who wants to clean up after eating a big meal? Once you’re done cooking, clean everything before sitting down for your meal. All you’ll have left is a bowl and plates. TIP: Clean out the dishwasher before you start cooking. When you finish using a pot or pan, clean it or put it in the dishwasher.
  5. Wipe down the shower – Prevent hard water buildup and mold by using a squeegee or microfiber cloth to wipe down your shower after every use. TIP: Keep your tools close. A microfiber towel can be kept on a towel rack or a squeegee in the shower.
  6. Swiffer before bed – Avoid dust bunny build up by sweeping with a Swiffer before heading to bed. A Swiffer will pick up all of the extra dust that falls on your floors and prevent dust from spreading around your house. TIP: Keep your baseboards clean by wiping them with a dryer sheet. The sheet prevents static buildup so dust falls on the floor and eventually your Swiffer picks it up instead of staying on the baseboard.
  7. Put their clothes away – It’s easy to come home from work and drop clothes on the floor, bed, or chair. Instead, take a minute to put dirty clothes in the hamper or hang them back up. Do a quick check before bed and put all leftover clothes in the hamper. You’ll be amazed at how much cleaner your home will look just by keeping clothes picked up.
  8. Wipe mirrors and sink – After you finish brushing your teeth, quickly wipe off any toothpaste that lands on the faucet or mirror. TIP: Keep a microfiber hand towel by the sink. It will prevent streaking your mirror.

Pet Friendly Floors

Mostly over half of American households have a pet. What is there not to love about having an animal best friend. But let’s be honest, maintenance of floors when having pets is a bit challenging.

One of the biggest problems with pets is their nails. If you don’t keep those nails trimmed, they could scratch and damage laminate or hardwood floor. But this article will help you choose some pet friendly floor choices so your floors look wonderful and the least of your worries is your pet.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is popular flooring option for families with pets. These floors are durable, long-lasting, resistant to moisture, scratches and dents and they are also easy to maintain. Best part that it softens the sound of your pet’s nails when they walk across the floor.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate is also a great choice if you have a pet who has the run of the house. You may buy some laminate floors that are protected against scratches, stains, and scuffs. Laminate is very easy to clean. Just dust mop or vacuum regularly and use a damp mop. If your pet creates any spills or puddles on your hardwood floor, you have to mop them up immediately because the boards can stain and warp from moisture.

Hardwood Flooring

Look for hardwood flooring that have finishes combined with acrylic micro-beveled edges. This type of hardwood flooring resists scratching because the beveled edge give your pets’ nails something to grip onto as they cross the floor. Hardwood flooring with a rustic or distressed look is a good design choice since it already shows signs of wear or tear (that’s the look) and will hide imperfections. We also recommend selecting flooring with a lower gloss level to help hide additional marks that may occur.

Do you want simple maintenance tips for waxed floor flooring? This article gives you some tips to do so. So, keep on reading.

For routine, day to day maintenance, first mistake many do is that they damp-mop waxed floors. All that needs to be done is to vacuum and/or sweep regularly. However, once or twice a year, get rid of the old wax and apply a fresh new coat (of course with the help of a professional). Also, if a high-traffic area gets cloudy and no shine in between treatments, you can spot-wax the area. Try to sweep or vacuum often as dirt destroys wood floors. Placing a doormat at front door of home cuts down sweeping time as well. If you have mud or spills, try to clean them immediately as wood is easily damaged by water.

For waxing technique, start by vacuuming the floor to remove dust. Next, strip the old wax with stripper or with mineral spirits which consists of rubbing into wood and then wiping off with a clean smooth cloth. Make sure you keep the area ventilated until floor dries. After the floor is dried, apply a thin coat of wax, using an applicator or a cloth depends of wax manufacturer instructions. Let the wax dry and if you want more protection you can always apply a second coat.

For buffing, use a cloth or what is easier let professionals with buffing machines to do the jobs. Professionals are experts and know for example, to buff in the direction of the wood grain.

For simple wood floor problems, if you have white water spots, add a small amount of mineral spirits to an extra-fine steel wool pad and rub the area in circular motion. Remember to keep area ventilated until it dries. This also works for heel marks.

Remember that to preserve hardwood floors and extend their life you must follow rules no matter what the finish!

DO USE a cleaning product exclusively for floors recommended by the floor finisher. Please note that other floor cleaners contain ingredients that are not allowed to be used if you want to keep your floor’s warranty. Or try making your own DIY Floor Cleaner: Add a quarter cup of mild or pH-neutral to a bucket of water.

DO HAVE a mopping routine cleaning technique. Also, please remember that water is actually wood’s worst enemy so use a damp mop instead of a soaking wet one.

DO MOP Dip the mop in the direction of the wood grain. Also, when the water gets dirty, empty the bucket and don’t continue using it instead re-do the cleaning solution. Once you are finished mopping, go back over the entire floor with clean water to rinse it out.

DO HAVE a daily sweep routine and mop once or twice a week.

DON’T USE: Oils, waxes or furniture sprays. The oil will leave a residue, furniture spray creates a slippery top surface and wax takes time to apply and makes re-coating difficult.

DON’T USE straight ammonia, alkaline products or other abrasive cleaners.

DON’T RELY on water by itself or a vinegar and water based solution to clean hardwood floors. Mopping with water will result in gloomy gray looking floors and do anything to clean the dirt buildup.

DON’T USE Vinegar and water as it is not as effective as soapy water and may diminish the glossy look on top of the floor.

DON’T BE afraid to get dirty. In small areas that need serious attention, I clean with a cloth as you will feel how you are picking up the dirty residue from your floors.

Do you already have wooden floors at home or perhaps you are thinking about changing your carpet to wooden floors. Hardwood floors are one of the most popular and valuable features for your house. It is easier to maintain when compared to carpets but you must be really careful with the cleaning liquids you will pick if you don’t want to damage them. Hardwood floors need regular maintenance and refinishing to keep them looking like brand new. If you know what the finish is, it would be easier to maintain.

How much wear and tear your floors get, determine how often you need to refinish them and what product you use. For example, a home with just two adults might only have to refinish every 10 years versus a home with adults, kids, and a dog might need to refinish every three to four years.

If you are not sure what kind of finish you have, we can tell you how to find out. Just rub your finger across the floor and if no smudge appears, the floor is surface sealed. If you do create a smudge, the floor has been treated with a penetrating seal, oil finish, shellac, varnish or lacquer, and then waxed.

If you have surface-sealed floors most likely they are sealed with urethane, polyurethane or polyacrylic, this kind of floor are stain and water-damage resistant therefore they are easier to maintain. All you have to do is sweep and mop.

If on the other hand, you have penetrating-seal-treated and oil-treated floors, these kind of finishes soak into the wood grain and hardens. This type of floor must be indulged with attention and protected with liquid or paste wax.

There are also lacquered, varnished, shellacked and untreated floors. Although technically surface finishes, lacquers, varnishes and shellacs are not as resistant to moisture or spills like the other sealants. Treat floors with these finishes and floors with no finish as you would penetrating-seal-treated and oil-treated floors as mentioned above.

Concrete wall-covering has high demand in the last years. Concrete pairs well with an interior design focusing on modern and loft-style. This combines great with metal accents, bright colors, earth tone brick and wood décor such as cabinets.

If you like a rustic style, natural stone is your friend! It gives the interior of a home a nostalgic look, it’s super original, gives a welcoming atmosphere and definitely scream “modern contemporary look”. Stone or porcelain tile is very popular to decorate the back entries or formal entries.

But if you want to make a good first impression more welcoming, try wood-look tile or porcelain concrete tiles that go great with outdoor spaces. If you are opting for floor tiles, make sure they are large-sized tiles because this creates an illusion of bigger spaces. To connect your entryway to the rest of the house go for simplicity and you can opt for porcelain concrete tiles, natural stone tile or wood-look tile to achieve that contemporary look. The dining room is also a great spot to let your creativity shine. A granite, pebble or marble tile will give it an elegant and classy look. Don’t use area mugs, instead, create a space where normally the rug would be placed and use a different tile style to create a impression or “rug area”.

In the bedroom, tile would look great instead of the traditional carpet. Also, the warmness of wood floor never fails as well to give the warm cozy feel that a bedroom requires. If you have a small room, make it look big by using the same chosen floor finish to one of the walls. Or if your room is already very spacious, try opting for a stone-look tile on the floor and wood-look tile on the walls.
